Weeping & Gnashing of Teeth

Didn’t Jesus talk about a place where there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth? This expression is found in seven places - Matthew 8:12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30, Luke 13:28. This is heavily symbolic as Jesus uses it only in a parable or a symbolic statement all seven times. Its meaning differs based on the context. But its general sense in all the places is – a finite period of punishment/trial for a group of people who have erred in God’s sight.

Theme Text – “Behold, I have refined you; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.” Isaiah 48:10 NASB.

We studied the actual meaning of the various words translated as hell in the Bible – Sheol/Hades, Gehenna and Tartaroo. But didn’t Jesus talk about a place where there would be weeping and gnashing of teeth?
This expression is found in seven places –
Matthew 8:12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30, Luke 13:28.

  • It is obviously symbolic as Jesus uses it only in a parable or a symbolic statement all seven times.
  • Its meaning differs based on the context. But its general sense in all the places is – a finite period of punishment/trial for a group of people who have erred in God’s sight.
  • In Matt 13:42,50 it’s compared to a fiery furnace. Furnace is actually used across the Bible as a place of testing and refinement (Isa 48:10, Prov 17:3).
Note: It’s also important to keep in mind that the purpose of the fire in the smith’s furnace is different from that of the fire in Gehenna‘s lake of fire. Gehenna‘s lake of fire is employed to destroy, whereas the furnace fire is used to refine.
  • In other verses, the weeping and gnashing of teeth is described as happening in outer darkness (out of favor). For instance, in Matt 8:12, Jesus uses this phrase to explain that many Gentiles would take up positions in the Kingdom of God and how that would cause anguish (weeping and gnashing of teeth) for those among Israel who had rejected him – essentially a punishment.

  1. The Greek phrase for “gnashing of teeth” literally means “grinding one’s teeth together”
and, unnatural grinding or clenching can cause a serious jaw impairment which would
literally make you weep in pain. If you suspect you have this case, see your dentist
    right away.

  3. The pain and damage bruxism can cause to your teeth and health in general can in some case be extremely severe. Many TMJ sufferers can grind their teeth so severely at night that some actually manage to damage or even crack their own teeth.

  4. Perhaps many are missing the point of this article entirely.

The article is not meant as an health advisory for people who grind their teeth to go have that condition looked at by a professiinal.

Jesus was speaking metaphorically, not dropping subliminal messages to his audience to drum up more business for his orthodintist side-hustle business.

I guess the misguided reaction to this article gives a good indication that people were just as uninlightened thousands of hears ago as they are today.

I would suggest that all the ignoramuses just Go to Hell, but apparently there is no Hell, so maybe they could read a book in the Dentist waiting room instead.
