Theme Text– ‘Their fear toward me is taught by the precepts of men’ (Isaiah 29:13)
1) What do many of the present-day churches preach as punishment for sin?
Preachers warn from their pulpits – ‘If you don’t accept Christ as your Savior, you are condemned for your sins! When you die, you would be sent alive to hell to be tortured forever in raging fire!’
Eternal torment is the ominous warning. Many claim that a fire-proof Satan rules this underworld and that his demons torture the people cast down there.
2) On what basis is this preached?
This torment theory is based on the assumption of an immortal soul (being eternally alive after death). But does that concept have any biblical foundation?
We can’t find any. The Bible rather seems to say the dead are really dead – not alive. 
They sleep (1Kings 2:10, Acts 7:60, 1Thess 4:14, 1Cor 15:6 etc.) awaiting the promised resurrection. It talks of neither consciousness, nor pain nor any feeling whatsoever in the grave (Psalm 146:4, Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10).
3) What is the soul’s punishment for sin according to the Bible?
God tells us the penalty for sin – ‘the soul that sinneth, it shall die’ (Ezekiel 18:20).
Yes, “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).
God sentenced Adam to death for his sin of disobedience. Neither was there a mention of Adam having an immortal soul, nor any threat of it burning eternally. Adam was the soul (Gen 2:7) and he died.
Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (Romans 5:12).
Yes, death is our punishment.
4) But doesn’t the Bible mention hell fire in many places?
Four words have been translated as hell in the Bible – Sheol, Hades, Gehenna and Tartaroo.
Let’s study them to understand what they mean. And let’s study the lake of fire too. Read further.
"Hell" resides only in the mind of Carnal-Christians

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Yes the lake of fire Gahanna, the dump that burned 24/7 outside of Jerusalem, were the unrighteous were thrown
When God created Adam was it his purpose that he died and then went to heaven ? Meaning his death and his descendants would just have a physical one? If so then his death would be a reward and Gods warning about eating the fruit recorded in Genesis would have no meaning.
Good point peter … Question then why did God make man the way he did out of clay why didnt he just created man in a spirit form in heaven why this earth expirience …

Otkrivenje 21: 8 A strašljivima i nevjernima i poganima i krvnicima, i kurvarima, i vračarima, i idolopoklonicima, i svima lažama, njima je dijel u JEZERO ŠTO GORI OGNJEM i sumporom; koje JE SMRT DRUGA. Dakle viječna smrt šta je tu tako teško za razumeti sam redak objašnjava tu se ne radi po Adamu smrti iz koje možemo biti otkupljeni putem Isusove žrtve.
This operates on the assumption that the English translation should supersede the Greek however in Greek and Hebrew the words used do not reflect Eternity and infact Jews at the time Jesus was preaching did have a concept of Eternal Torment and the words used for it were completely different. God says in Jeremiah he would not think to put his children in the fire. I believe that if the duration of punishment is temporary and God desires to save and is the saviour of all men and also being all powerful, which are all things the bible says, and I believe, then it stands to reason that some people are purified through trials and tribulations in this life and others after the judgment. It also says God will be all in all, and if people are in hell cut off that can't become true. The other possibility is that the wicked perish, also something I consider, but I struggle to reconcile the many statement that seem to me, to indicate the universal salvific will of our great God.
